Why anti-apartheid hero Sydney Kentridge was the finest advocate of his generation

Preface

I encountered Sydney Kentridge frequently in the second – English – half of his legal career. This book deals with the first half, when he practised in South Africa. Rather indulgently, I was unable to resist interpolating into my review a few anecdotes from his later years. But I could not enthuse quite as much about this book as about Thomas Grant’s previous publication (the review of which is also on this website). The latter was painted in much more variegated tones than were no doubt appropriate to any treatment of the apartheid regime, but the subtler palette made for a better book.
