Preface
To be asked by the Catholic Herald to review B (After Dante) by Ned Denny had from the outset the look of the hospital pass. In the result, I tried harder than perhaps I should have to conceal my lack of real sympathy with the project, which was born in part from my deep reverence for the original. Yet the sheer effort in rendering the whole work into modern English, combined with the author’s undoubted seriousness of spiritual purpose, made me glad that I did not put the boot in. The equivocal tone left it to readers to judge for themselves – which is arguably what a review should do.
