Preface
This is a highly irregular production: it is bad form to review a book in whose gestation you have been involved, at least without full disclosure. My friendship with Roger Scruton began with our collaboration over The Ring of Truth, and the many emails we exchanged are to me precious memorials of this remarkable man, whose understanding of Wagner was profound. I am also grateful to Daniel Johnson, the founder and long-time editor of Standpoint, for allowing me to occupy a space in his distinguished magazine – on this occasion and many times subsequently.
