Preface

I had originally heard of Nigel McGilchrist through Wykehamist friends who, when I was enthusing about Iain, directed my attention to his no less remarkable brother. I then happened to listen to a podcast of the two of them discussing this book, and the rest followed easily enough. Once again, I am grateful for the receptivity of the editors of The New Criterion in giving me a free rein with my subject-matter. It is an oddity to have reviewed books by two brothers for the same magazine a few months apart, but I am glad to have done so. Both the similarities and the differences between the two of them have been a pleasure to discover.
