Why anti-apartheid hero Sydney Kentridge was the finest advocate of his generation

Preface

From a personal perspective, this partial biography is an oddity. I have known Sydney Kentridge for the second half of his legal career which took place in England; this book deals with the first half in South Africa. Nothing wrong with that, though I was unable to resist interpolating into my review a few anecdotes from his later years. But it will be seen that I could not enthuse quite as much about this book as about Thomas Grant’s previous work, painted in more variegated and subtle tones than were appropriate to the contemptible apartheid regime.
